This patient unfortunately was treated for gynecomastia by a different surgeon and left with a noticeable deformity.  He reports that he originally lost over a 100 pounds and had excessive skin and fat deposits in his chat.  His prior surgeon only performed liposuction to remove the excess fat but did not address the skin laxity.  As a result of this procedure, the patient has very loose and wrinkled skin which does not look anatomically normal.  He underwent a gynecomastia revision which entailed skin excision and repositioning of his nipple to more a masculine, anatomically normal position. *Individual results may vary

What is gynecomastia?

Male breast reduction is a condition that causes enlargement of breast gland tissue in males. Male breast reduction surgery is the procedure that reduces this excess tissue by removing excess fat and tissue and creating a flatter, more enhanced chest area.

In addition, your Male breast reduction surgeon may also make changes to the sizing and position of the areolas if they have started to sag or stretch. Finally, he or she may remove and adjust excess skin if it is present.

If you think you may have Male breast reduction, you may have experienced some or all of the following on one or both breasts:

  • Excess fat and tissue localized in the chest area
  • Excess skin on the chest
  • Emotional discomfort due to these changes
  • Lowered self-esteem
  • An avoidance of certain activities, clothing items, or intimate situations

Who is a good candidate for male breast reduction surgery?

You should be at a relatively normal weight for your height, age, and body type in order to be eligible for surgery. You should also be in good overall physical health and have realistic expectations for surgery. You should not use drugs or smoke, nor should you have any life-threatening medical conditions that may impede your ability to fully heal from surgery.

Specific to this procedure, it’s also important for male to be at an age and developmental stage wherein the development of the breasts has stabilized. Other treatment alternatives must have been ruled out before you will be eligible for surgery.

Finally, you must have a desire to reduce your excess breast tissue due to the physical and emotional discomfort the condition has caused you.

What should I expect during a consultation for gynecomastia surgery?

A consultation appointment is necessary before you can book your surgery date. This is a time for you to express your hopes and goals as they pertain to the results of your surgery. Dr. Mohan will be able to examine you and your medical history in order to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.

With this in mind, remember to bring your medical records with you to the appointment. Include any recent test results, a list of medications and supplements you are currently taking, and any other pertinent medical information. At your consultation appointment, Dr. Mohan will examine you physically and take a look at your general health status. He will then make a recommendation for the best course of treatment for Gynecomastia Surgery.

What are the risks of surgery?

Take your time when deciding whether or not Male breast reduction surgery is right for you, and be sure to ask any questions that come to mind at your consultation appointment.

As a rule, plastic surgery procedures like Male breast reduction surgery are safe and effective, but as with any surgery, it’s important to understand the risks and potential complications. For this procedure, these include:

  • Risks associated with anesthesia
  • Bleeding and blood clots
  • Infection
  • Irregularities in shape or breast contour
  • Pulmonary or cardiac complications
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Poor healing of wounds
  • Persistent pain
  • Fat necrosis
  • Changes in breast or nipple sensation
  • Damage to deeper structures like the blood vessels or nerves
  • Bad reactions to suture materials, tape, topical preparations, injected agents, or glues
  • Asymmetry of the breasts
  • Unfavorable scarring
  • The possible need for revision surgery

What are the steps of a Male breast reduction procedure?

Every individual patient is different, so each surgery is bound to look different as well. In general, however, the following steps will be taken during Male breast reduction surgery:

1. Anesthesia

The surgery is generally performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Depending on the specifications of your surgery, Dr. Mohan will make the best recommendation for you. Ultimately, anesthesia medications are administered for your comfort during the procedure.

2. Liposuction

Liposuction is a key element of Male breast reduction surgery. It is used to remove excess fatty tissue from the breast area. In some procedures, it may be the only technique used.

When liposuction is performed, small incisions are made in and around the target area near the breasts. From there, a thin hollow tube made out of metal and called a cannula will be inserted into these incisions.

Dr. Mohan will agitate the fat beneath the skin using the cannula and will then suction out the excess fatty tissue so that it is permanently removed. In some cases, a specialized liposuction technique will be used, but this depends on the specifics of your breast reduction surgery.

3. Excision

In cases where excess skin or glandular breast tissue needs to be removed, excision will be used. This technique is also used when the nipple or areola need to be resized or repositioned.

What should I expect during my gynecomastia surgery recovery?

When you get out of surgery, you will need to wear dressings and bandages for a certain amount of time that will be dictated by Dr. Mohan. You will also need to wear tight support garments that will minimize bleeding and swelling. Sometimes, a drainage tube will be placed beneath the skin directly after surgery as well.

Dr. Mohan will provide you with specific instructions for recovery. Be sure to follow these. You should have someone available after your  gynecomastia procedure who can take you home from the surgical facility. At home, additional assistance can be beneficial as well because you will need to rest for several days and weeks.

It is extremely important to follow Dr. Mohan’s recovery instructions and to avoid any activities that may hinder your results. This means taking at least a few days off from work and abstaining from exercise and other physical activities.

As you attend your postoperative appointments with Dr. Mohan, he will examine your progress and tell you when you can return to normal activities such as going back to work and performing light exercise.

What results should I expect after surgery?

You should see results from your surgery directly after the  gynecomastia procedure. However, there will be some postsurgical swelling, which will make it difficult to see the full results. Ideally, these will be visible after approximately 3 to 6 months.

Expect to have some scarring after surgery. If you follow your postoperative instructions closely and care for the incision sites, these incision lines should fade with time. Dr. Mohan will also do his best to make the incisions within the natural contours of your body so that they are less noticeable.

Gynecomastia Surgery Dallas Cost

The most recent statistics regarding Male breast reduction surgery (from The American Society of Plastic Surgeons in 2020) show the procedure costing an average of $4239. Health insurance typically does not cover surgery or any other type of plastic surgery.

This price is for the surgery itself, but it’s important to remember that other phases of the surgery, including the administration of anesthesia and medical tests, will need to be factored in too. Surgeon’s fees, hospital and facility fees, prescription costs, and other charges may need to be added in as well.

Procedure FAQ

Will it go away without surgery?
Sometimes, it is a result of puberty, and in this case, it may simply go away with time and physical development. In other situations, losing excess weight through eating a healthy diet and exercising can help with symptoms of gynecomastia . For those who do not see any improvement with either of these solutions, surgery may be the only solution.
What causes of gynecomastia?
There is no single cause of gynecomastia, and every individual is different, but experts believe it may develop due to an imbalance of hormones, the taking of certain medications, or the use of steroids.
Can excess breast tissue grow back after surgery?
Most individuals will see a permanent change after surgery, and excess breast tissue will not go back. In some cases, however, certain situations or developed habits can lead to a return of excess breast tissue. For example, a fluctuation in hormones, weight gain, or steroid use may diminish your results.
What if you don’t treat gynecomastia?
If left untreated, there are few risks associated with not treating gynecomastia. Some sources claim there may be a very small increased risk for male breast cancer, but this is rare. The biggest risk is likely prolonged physical and emotional discomfort.
